Although this enforcement of brand loyalty through the use of promotion codes may seem like a bad thing, the truth is that both for consumers and the airlines themselves removing the travel agents from the ticket booking process eliminates the middleman thus allowing the lower ticket prices for the consumer as well is more profit for the airlines.
